2019-03-24 The Last Words of Christ – A Word of Love

(Text: John 19:25-27)

You can also listen to the children’s message for the service:

Text: Standing near the cross were Jesus’ mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary (the wife of Clopas), and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, “Dear woman, here is your son.” 27 And he said to this disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from then on this disciple took her into his home. John 19:25-27 (NIV)

These words seem very simple, but they show the heart of God. Jesus’ words to Mary show us God’s compassion and care for us. This passage also shows us that we need loving relationships with each other.

Jesus’ words to His mother and the apostle John reveal that God is truly interested in us and loves us.

“When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, ‘Dear woman, here is your son.’ 27 And he said to this disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’” vss. 26-27

“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” 1 John 4:16 (NIV)

“I will be your God throughout your lifetime—until your hair is white with age. I made you, and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you.” Isaiah 46:4 (NLT)

The friends and family gathered around Jesus, as He’s dying, show us how we need relationships and love from one another.

“Standing near the cross were Jesus’ mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary (the wife of Clopas), and Mary Magdalene… And from then on this disciple took her into his home. vss. 25, 27b

“If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” 1 John3:17-18

“By helping each other with your troubles, you truly obey the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2 (NCV)

“By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:35 (NKJV)

“Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Ephesians 5:1-2 (NIV)
